Egg Freezing

Egg freezing in Mumbai at Zoi Fertility is a decision about time. It preserves your current egg quality against the biological clock so that if you need IVF in the future, you are working with eggs from the age you are now, not the age you will be then. Dr Yashodhara, with over 27 years of experience in fertility medicine, personally guides every egg freezing cycle at Zoi Fertility.

Egg Freezing

What is egg freezing?

Egg freezing in Mumbai, also known as oocyte cryopreservation, is a procedure in which mature eggs are retrieved from your ovaries, vitrified (flash frozen), and stored at minus 196 degrees Celsius. The eggs are not fertilised at this stage. They remain your eggs, held in a state of biological suspension, until you are ready to use them.

When you decide to proceed, the eggs are thawed, fertilised with sperm in the laboratory via ICSI, and the resulting embryos are cultured and transferred to your uterus. The process from that point is identical to a standard frozen embryo transfer cycle.

What vitrification changes

Earlier egg freezing methods used slow cooling, which allowed ice crystals to form inside the egg and damage its structure. Vitrification eliminates this by cooling the egg so rapidly that it transitions directly from liquid to a glass like solid state with no crystal formation. At Zoi Fertility, we use the latest vitrification technology to ensure the highest possible survival rates when your eggs are eventually thawed.

Egg freezing in Mumbai is increasingly popular among women who want to preserve their fertility options while focusing on career, education, or personal goals. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), egg freezing is a recognised and safe procedure when performed at accredited clinics. At Zoi Fertility, with over 5,400 IVF cycles performed and a 68% success rate, you can be confident that your eggs are in expert hands.

Are Children Born from Frozen Eggs Healthy?

Yes. Decades of data from thousands of births globally show no increased rate of chromosomal abnormalities, congenital conditions, or developmental issues in children born from vitrified eggs compared to those born from fresh cycles or natural conception.

The egg freezing process does not alter the genetic material inside the egg. The chromosomes that determine your child’s biology are preserved exactly as they are at the time of freezing. Vitrification affects the cell structure, not the DNA.

The Core Advantage: You Freeze Your Biological Age

Egg quality declines with age. This is not a gradual trend — it accelerates after 35. The eggs you have at 32 are biologically different from the eggs you will have at 38. Chromosomal abnormalities become more common; fertilisation rates drop; embryo quality decreases.

When you freeze eggs at 32, you preserve eggs from that biological age. If you use them at 38, the IVF cycle works with the quality profile of your 32-year-old eggs — not your 38-year-old ones. This is the clinical logic behind social egg freezing: you are not buying certainty. You are buying a better starting position if you need fertility treatment later.

This advantage is real but not unlimited. Frozen eggs do not guarantee a pregnancy. Age at freezing, number of eggs frozen, and individual ovarian response all determine the probability of eventual success. Dr. Yashodhara will give you a realistic assessment of what your specific egg count and AMH level mean for your probability profile — before you make a decision.

How does Oocyte Freezing work?

An egg is the largest cell in the human body. Sperms and embryos are technically easy to freeze. Egg contains a lot of water inside, and when frozen can form crystal ice, which can cause trauma to the cell. The newer techniques now, dehydrate the cell, and then frozen, thereby preventing crystal ice formation. This technique is called Vitrification used for cryopreservation of eggs or oocytes (technical word). Zoi Fertility only uses vitrification for all their egg freezing cycles.

Egg freezing success rate

Vitrification for egg freezing is a relatively new procedure and less than 5% of clinics are doing it since 2012. The chance of success is largely determined by the woman’s age at the time of freezing. Currently, we would expect we could retrieve 85% or more eggs which are frozen.

Success rates are lower for women over 35 than for someone who is in their twenties or early thirties.

Who Should Consider Egg Freezing

Procedure for Freezing Eggs

The process follows the same initial steps as IVF stimulation. You take injectable hormones for 10–12 days to stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple follicles. The growth of those follicles is monitored by ultrasound every 2–3 days. When follicles reach the target size, a trigger injection is administered to mature the eggs.

Egg retrieval is performed 36 hours after the trigger, under conscious sedation, using a transvaginal ultrasound-guided needle. The procedure takes approximately 20 minutes. Most patients go home the same day.

Retrieved eggs are immediately assessed by our embryologist. Mature eggs (those at the MII stage) are vitrified. Immature eggs cannot be frozen and are not stored. The number of mature eggs retrieved varies with age, AMH level, and ovarian response — typically between 8 and 15 in a good responder in her early 30s.

Eggs are stored in our cryopreservation facility at -196°C, in individually labelled straws, with a continuous electronic monitoring and alarm system.

Costs associated with Egg Freezing

The costs involved are towards the following parameters

Egg freezing in Mumbai at Zoi Fertility usually costs between INR 1,50,000 to 2,00,000 depending on your age, hormonal values, and the number of eggs retrieved. At Zoi, the costs reduce if you do multiple egg pick up attempts to freeze your eggs.

EGG FREEZING IN MUMBAI

Why Egg Freezing at Zoi Is a Strategic Decision — Not an Emergency

You are not running out of time. You are buying it.

Egg freezing — oocyte vitrification — is the most consequential fertility decision a woman in her 30s can make. Not because something is wrong. Because biology does not negotiate with career timelines, relationship readiness, or personal circumstances. At Zoi Fertility, egg freezing is treated with the same clinical seriousness as an active IVF cycle. The eggs you freeze today may become the embryos that construct your family in five or ten years. They deserve a laboratory environment — and a medical team — that respects that weight.

Dr Yashodhara has guided patients through this decision for over 27 years. She will not sell you urgency. She will give you data.

THE SCIENCE

How Egg Freezing Works at Zoi Fertility

Vitrification — Not Slow Freezing

Zoi uses vitrification — an ultra-rapid freezing technique that prevents ice crystal formation within the egg. This is the global standard for oocyte cryopreservation, delivering 95%+ survival rates upon thawing. Your eggs are flash-frozen at a rate that preserves cellular integrity at the moment of retrieval.

Laboratory Standards That Protect Your Investment

Frozen eggs are stored in Zoi’s continuously monitored cryogenic facility. Temperature stability, liquid nitrogen levels, and storage integrity are tracked digitally around the clock. The laboratory is supervised by an Oxford-trained senior embryologist with experience across thousands of vitrification and thawing cycles.

Stimulation Protocol Calibrated to You

Not every woman’s ovaries respond identically to stimulation medication. Dr Yashodhara calibrates your protocol to your AMH levels, antral follicle count, and age — drawing on 5,400+ IVF cycles of experience. The goal is maximal egg yield with minimal discomfort. Monitoring is frequent, adjustments are made in real time, and the egg retrieval itself takes 15–20 minutes under sedation.

TIMING YOUR DECISION

When Should You Freeze Your Eggs — The Clinical Answer

The clinical answer: as early as possible after 28, ideally before 35. The candid answer: whenever you have the clarity that your timeline for children is uncertain.

Egg quality declines measurably after 35 and more steeply after 38. Freezing eggs at 30–33 preserves oocytes at their most viable stage. Freezing at 36–38 is still valuable — but typically requires more eggs, and potentially more than one retrieval cycle, to achieve the same probability of a future live birth.

Dr Yashodhara will assess your ovarian reserve through AMH testing and antral follicle count, then give you a realistic expectation of how many eggs can be retrieved and what that means for your future options.

No manufactured urgency. Just the clinical picture, clearly drawn.
